Ask a Stalker - How Does Faking Or Spoofing Caller ID Work?

Question: You have mentioned in the past about stalkers faking their caller ID or spoofing it or something like that. How is this done exactly? I don't want to fake my caller ID to do anything bad; I just thought it'd be a funny prank to play on my family and friends! If I were some how able to fake my caller ID, they wouldn't be able to track me down with a reverse cell phone look up, which I know you recommend a lot!

Well, this is an interesting question, and one I get asked more often than not. Spoofing (or faking, which ever you wish to call it) ones caller ID has an interesting history behind it. I remember when spoofing caller ID first started. It caused a massive panic in the reverse phone look-up industry, because like you said, how are you to track someone down when they fake their caller ID?

Aside from the industry panic, there was real harm done with spoofing caller ID. Remember back in the day when you could save your voicemail password, or didn't have to enter one at all if you accessed your voice mail box directly from your cellular phone? Well, as it turns out, people were spoofing their caller ID so well that cellular phones couldn't tell the difference either. As a result, if you were to call a number with the same number as the phone (spoofed, of course), the voice mail box thought it was the phone calling itself! Yes, you would immediately get access to their voicemail-no password needed.

A flood of celebrities voicemails were leaked to the Internet. You could probably find them still floating around out there. Celebs like Paris Hilton, Eminem, and Christian Slater had their private voicemails released, and were prank called non-stop by various numbers. I remember one hilarious incident with Christian Slater where someone called him from what appeared to be T-Mobile (it wasn't; T-Mobile's number was spoofed), and the poor dude fell for it. The entire conversation was recorded and released online.

All of this came from a site called CovertCall.com. As far as I know, they were the first site to ever offer such a service, but shortly after their site launch, they put the site up for sale ($20,000). CovertCall evidently had no takers and the site has since been down for years since the voice mail incident. FYI, cellular carriers have since fixed the voice mail recognition bug.

So, how does it work? Beats me. The technology behind it is similar to Vonage (VOIP - Voice Over IP), but beyond that, I do not really know. I was more of a stalker than a hacker type that was into technology that deep where you'd know the guts of it.

And, that's the story behind spoof caller ID's.
